This afghan square crochet stitch pattern is a versatile design that can be worked using any thread or yarn. Most yarns have the recommended crochet hook size on the label. But you can play around with different options to get tighter or looser crochet fabric.
How to grow your square pattern:
You could make a lovely-to-look-at baby blanket or pillow cover of any size. Grow the square pattern for as long as you want. Simply repeat rows (given in diagram and step-by-step instructions) until you get the desired size of your project.
Techniques used in this stitch
UK / US crochet term:
Chain stitch – ch
Slip stitch – sl.st
Double crochet / Single crochet – dc / sc
Treble / Double crochet – tr / dc
Long loop stitch with 4 dc /sc in top – l.l.st:
* Yarn over hook, insert hook into next tr/dc and draw up a loop 1 cm long; rep from* 3 times. Yarn over and draw through 8 loops, yarn over and draw through 2 loops. Insert hook into middle of loop stitch and work 3 dc/sc in this space.

Work next steps:
"Beginning 1": 3 ch, 4 tr/dc in third of 7 ch.
"Middle stitches 1": * 1 dc/sc in space of 4 ch, 4 ch, 1 dc/sc in next space of 4 ch, 4 tr/dc in dc/sc below; rep from *.
"Middle point 1": 1 dc/sc in next space of 4 ch, 4 ch , 1 dc/sc in space of 4 ch, 9 tr/dc in tr/dc below.
Repeat "Middle stitches 1" + "Middle point 1" 2 times.

Repeat rows 5 -6 until you have reached your desired size of square.
Edging:
Round 1: work like Row 5.
Round 2: 4 ch, * work over tr/dc: 1 tr/dc + 1ch; 1 dc/sc in space of 4 ch, 1 ch; rep from *, work sl.st in third of 4 chains at the end of round.
Round 3: work in each space of 1 ch between tr/dc : 1 dc/sc + 2 tr/dc + 1 dc/sc and in each space of 1 ch between tr/dc and dc/sc - 1dc/sc. At the end of row make sl.st into dc/sc.
Little square:
For the Little square work Rounds 1, 2 and 3 of big square and Rounds 2 and 3 of edging.
Middle part of square (yellow yarn) consist of 3 foundation chains.
Connection:
The pictures below show connection process.
In space of 1 ch work 1 dc/sc + 1 tr/dc.
Release the hook from the loop, insert it in into the same stitches of another motif. Insert hook again in the loop.
Pull the loop through stitches, then work 1 dc/sc + 1 tr/dc in the same space of 1 ch.
