Feel free to use any type of yarn (or even thread) for your project. Most yarns have the recommended crochet hook size on the label.
Techniques used in this stitch
UK / US crochet term:
Chain stitch – ch
Double crochet / Single crochet – dc/sc
Half treble / half double crochet – htr/hdc
Font post treble / font post double crochet – FPtr/dc
Stitch – st
Post stitch - Pst
Foundation Chain: Multiples of 2 + 4
Row 1: Skip 1ch and make 1dc/sc in next, * 1dc/sc in next ch, 4ch, 1dc/sc in first ch, skip 1ch; rep from *, make 1c/sc in each of next 2chs, turn.

Row 2: Make 2ch and skip first st, * 1PFtr/dc over next dc/sc below, 1ch; rep from *, 1PFtr/dc over next dc/sc below, 1htr/hdc in last dc/sc, turn.

Row 3: Make 1ch and 1dc/sc in htr/hdc below, * 1dc/sc in next Pst, 4ch, 1dc/sc in first ch; rep from*, 1dc/sc in next Pst, 1dc/sc in second ch, turn.

Repeat rows 2 - 3 until you have reached your desired length.
