Crochet shell stitch

Guide

Materials

Fingering weight yarn, and crochet hook size 2.5 - 2.75 mm / C.
You may use any yarn of your choice, and a suitable hook.


Techniques used in this stitch

UK / US crochet term:

Chain stitch – ch

Double crochet / single crochet – dc / sc

Treble / Double crochet – tr / dc

Shell – shell: make 9tr/dc in same ch.

Stitch – st

Foundation Chain: Multiples of 8 + 2

Row 1: Skip 1ch, * 1dc/sc in next ch, skip 3ch, shell in next ch, skip 3ch; rep from *, 1dc/sc in last ch, turn.

Row 2: make 6ch, * 1dc/sc in middle (fifth) tr/dc of shell below, 3ch, 1tr/dc in dc/sc below, 3ch; rep from *, 1dc/sc in middle tr/dc of shell below, 3ch, 1tr/dc in last dc/sc, turn.

Row 3: make 3ch, work 3tr/dc + 1ch in each space of 3ch, make 3tr/dc in last space of 6ch, 1tr/dc in third ch and turn.

Row 4: make 1ch and 1dc/sc in first tr/dc, * work shell in next 1ch (between tr/dc), make 1dc/sc in space of 1ch; rep from *, work shell in next 1ch, make 1dc/sc in third ch, turn.

Repeat rows 2 – 4 until you have reached your desired length.
