Crochet cable stitch

Guide

Materials

Fingering weight yarn, and crochet hook size 2.5 - 2.75 mm / C.
You may use any yarn of your choice, and a suitable hook.


Techniques used in this stitch

UK / US crochet term:

Chain stitch – ch

Slip stitch – sl.st

Treble / Double crochet – tr/dc

Half treble / half double crochet – h.tr / h.dc

Front Post tr /dc – FPtr/dc: work just like normal tr/dc but insert your hook from front to back between the first and second stitches of the row below, and then from back to front again between the second and third stitches.

Back Post tr /dc – BPtr/dc: work like normal tr/dc but insert your hook from back to front between the the first and second stitches in the row below, and then from front to back again between the second and third stitches.

Shell of puff stitches - shell. Work in the same space of 1ch ( or into foundation ch): 1 puff stitch of 3 h.tr / h.dc + 1ch + 1 puff stitch of 3 h.tr / h.dc.

Foundation Chain: make 59 chs.

Row 3: 2ch, 5 BPtr/dc , 1 FPtr/dc, shell in shell, 1 FPtr/dc, 5 BPtr/dc.

Cable A: make 6 FPtr/dc.

Step 1:

work this step two times over next 12 stitches.

Crochet 6 FPtr/dc, 2ch, make 1 FPtr/dc over last stitch, then turn and work 5 BPtr/dc.

Turn, make 2 ch and 6 FPtr/dc, 2 ch, work 1sl.st in space of 2 ch and 1 sl.st in last FPtr/dc below.

Now you have two cable parts.

Continue crochet the row: 5 BPtr/dc .

Cable B: make 6 FPtr/dc.

Work the "step 1" two times over next 12 stitches.

Now you have two parts for cable B.

Make 6 FPtr/dc and continue crochet the row.

Work 5 BPtr/dc , 1 FPtr/dc, shell in shell, 1 FPtr/dc, 5 BPtr/dc, 1 h.tr / h.dc in second ch, turn.

Row 4: 2ch, 5 FPtr/dc , 1 BPtr/dc, shell in shell, 1 BPtr/dc, 5 FPtr/dc .

Cable B

Work 6 BPtr/dc.

Step 2:

Crochet 6 BPtr/dc over second part of cable (see pictures). Hold in front this part. Now work 6 BPtr/dc over first part of cable. Make 3 ch, drop the loop from your hook, insert your hook from back to front under the top 2 loops of the first stitch of the group, grab the dropped loop with your hook and pull it through the stitch.

Continue crochet the row: 5 FPtr/dc .

Cable A:

Work "step 2" over cable parts and 6 BPtr/dc.

Continue crochet the row: 5 FPtr/dc , 1 BPtr/dc, shell in shell, 1 BPtr/dc, 5 FPtr/dc, 1 h.tr / h.dc in second ch, turn.

Row 5: 2ch, 5 BPtr/dc , 1 FPtr/dc, shell in shell, 1 FPtr/dc, 5 BPtr/dc , 18 FPtr/dc, 5 BPtr/dc , 18 FPtr/dc, 5 BPtr/dc , 1 FPtr/dc, shell in shell, 1 FPtr/dc, 5 BPtr/dc, 1 h.tr / h.dc in second ch, turn.

Row 6: repeat row 2.

Row 7: 2ch, 5 BPtr/dc , 1 FPtr/dc, shell in shell, 1 FPtr/dc, 5 BPtr/dc.

Cable A

Work the "step 1" two times over next 12 stitches and 6 FPtr/dc.

Continue crochet the row: 5 BPtr/dc .

Cable B

Work 6 FPtr/dc and the "step 1" two times over next 12 stitches.

Continue crochet the row.

Work 5 BPtr/dc, 1 FPtr/dc, shell in shell, 1 FPtr/dc, 5 BPtr/dc, 1 h.tr / h.dc in second ch, turn.

Row 8: 2ch, 5 FPtr/dc , 1 BPtr/dc, shell in shell, 1 BPtr/dc, 5 FPtr/dc .

Cable B

Work 6 BPtr/dc and crochet "step 3":

Crochet 6 BPtr/dc over second part of cable (see pictures). Hold in front the first part of cable.

Make 3 ch, drop the loop from your hook, insert your hook from back to front under the top 2 loops of the first stitch of the group, grab the dropped loop with your hook and pull it through the stitch.

Now work 6 BPtr/dc over first part of cable.

Continue crochet the row: 5 FPtr/dc.

Cable A

Work 6 BPtr/dc and the "step 3"

Continue crochet the row: 5 FPtr/dc , 1 BPtr/dc, shell in shell, 1 BPtr/dc, 5 FPtr/dc, 1 h.tr / h.dc in second ch, turn.

Row 9: repeat row 5.

Repeat rows 2 - 9 until you have reached your desired length.

Cable C

For this cable work Rows 1, 2, 3, 4, 7 and 8 of Cable B. Then repeat Rows 3, 4, 7 and 8.
