Materials
Fingering weight yarn, and crochet hook size 2.5 - 2.75 mm / C.
You may use any yarn of your choice, and a suitable hook.
Techniques used in this stitch
UK / US crochet term:
Chain stitch – ch
Slip stitch - slt
Double crochet / Single crochet – dc/sc
Half treble / half double crochet – htr/hdc
Double treble / triple crochet – dtr/trc
Long crochet – Lc: yarn over hook 4 times, insert hook into st, yarn over and pull through st. Yarn over hook and draw yarn through first 2 loops on hook. Repeat the preceding step 4 more times until you have only 1 loop left on hook.

Row 2: Make 1ch and work 1dc/sc in middle loop of each htr/hdc below, 1dc/sc in second ch, turn.
Row 3: Make 5ch, * work left 4x4 Lc cross stitch: skip 5 stitches and work 1Lc in each of next 4st below, 1ch.
From the front, make 1LC in each of first 4 skipped stitches.
Make 1 ch and skip 1st below; rep from *.
Work 1 dtr/ trc in last st instead 1ch and turn.
Row 4: It is important to work this row very loosely. If needed, you can use a crochet hook with a larger size. Make 1ch and work 1slt in dtr/trc, in each Lc and in each 1ch (between groups of 4 Lc). When you work a slt over a 1ch, insert your hook under top 2 loops of the 1ch.
Work slt in fifth ch and turn.
Row 5: Make 2ch and skip first slt, work 1htr/hdc in each front loop of next slt, turn.
Row 6: Repeat row 2.
Row 7: Make 5ch, skip first dc/sc and work 1dtr/trc in each of next 4st below, make 1ch and skip 1st, * work right 4x4 Lc cross stitch: skip 5 stitches and work 1Lc in each of next 4st below, 1ch.
From the back, make 1LC in each of first 4 skipped stitches.
Make 1 ch and skip 1st below; rep from *.
Work 1dtr/trc in each of next 5st below, turn.
Row 8: Repeat row 4.
Row 9: Repeat row 5.
Repeat rows 2 - 9 until you have reached your desired length.
