Crochet popcorn stitch

Guide

Materials

Fingering weight yarn, and crochet hook size 2.5 - 2.75 mm / C.
You may use any yarn of your choice, and a suitable hook.


Techniques used in this stitch

UK / US crochet term:

Chain stitch – ch

Double crochet / single crochet – dc / sc

Treble / Double crochet – tr / dc

Half tr / half dc – htr / hdc

Popcorn stitch of 4 dc/sc – ppn(dc/sc)

Popcorn stitch of 5 tr/dc – ppn(tr/dc)

Row 1: Skip 4ch, *work 1tr/dc + 2ch + 1tr/dc in next ch, skip 2ch; rep from *, work 1tr/dc + 2ch + 1tr/dc in next ch, skip 1ch, make 1tr/dc in last ch, turn.

Row 2: Make 4ch, * work ppn(tr/dc) in next space of 2ch:

work 5 tr/dc in the same space of 2ch, drop the loop from your hook. Insert your hook from front to back under the top 2 loops of the first tr/dc of the group and grab the dropped loop.

Pull it through the stitch.

Make 2ch; rep from *, work ppn(tr/dc) in next space of 2ch, 1ch, 1tr/dc in third ch, turn.

Row 3: Make 1ch and 1dc/sc in first st, 1dc/sc in space of 1ch, * make 3ch, work ppn(dc/sc) in back loop of second ch (of row 2): work 4 dc/sc in the 2nd ch, drop the loop from your hook. Insert your hook from back to front under the top 2 loops of the first dc/sc of the group and grab the dropped loop.

Pull it through the stitch; rep from *,

make 3ch, work 1dc/sc in space of 4ch, 1dc/sc in third ch, turn.

Row 4: Make 3ch, * work 1tr/dc in next ppn(tr/dc) of row 2. All tr/dc stitches should be behind the row 3. Make 2ch; rep from *, work 1tr/dc in next ppn(tr/dc) of row 2, 1ch, 1htr/hdc in last dc/sc below, turn.

Row 5: Make 3ch, * work 1tr/dc + 2ch + 1tr/dc in next tr/dc below; rep from *, 1tr/dc in second ch, turn.

Repeat rows 2 - 5 until you have reached your desired length.
