Crochet square stitch

Guide

Materials

Pearl crochet cotton size 8, and steel crochet hook size 1.50 - 1.75 mm / 8 - 6.
You may use any yarn of your choice, and a suitable hook.


Techniques used in this stitch

UK / US crochet term:

Chain stitch – ch

Double crochet / Single crochet – dc / sc

Treble / Double crochet – tr / dc

Shell - work in the same space: 3 tr/dc + 1ch + 3 tr/dc

Foundation Chain: Multiples of 28 + 1

Row 1: 6 ch skip , work shell in next ch, * 15 ch, 18 ch skip, shell in next ch, 2 ch, 8 ch skip, shell in next ch; rep from*, 15 ch, 18 ch skip, shell in next ch , 1 tr/dc in last ch, turn.

Row 2: 3 ch, shell in shell, * 13 ch, shell in shell, 2 ch, shell in next shell; rep from*, 13 ch, shell in shell, 1 tr/dc in third ch, turn.

Row 3: 3 ch, shell in shell.

* Making square:

Make 8 ch.

Work 1 dc/sc in 9th foundation ch (between the first row shells). Chains of 1 and 2 Rows should be inside the dc/sc.

Turn and work 3 ch.

Work 8 tr/dc in next 8 ch.

Turn. 3 ch and 7 tr/dc.

Turn. 3 ch and 7 tr/dc.

Turn. 1 ch and 8 dc/sc.

Work shell in shell, 2 ch, shell in shell; rep from*, make one more square, shell in shell, 1 tr/dc in third ch, turn.

Row 4: 3 ch, shell in shell, * 15 ch, shell in shell, 2 ch, shell in next shell; rep from*, 15 ch, shell in shell, 1 tr/dc in third ch, turn.

Row 5: 3 ch, shell in shell, * 13 ch, shell in shell, 2 ch, shell in next shell; rep from*, 13 ch, shell in shell, 1 tr/dc in third ch, turn.

Row 6: 3 ch, shell in shell, * 13 ch, shell in shell, 2 ch, shell in next shell; rep from*, 13 ch, shell in shell, 1 tr/dc in third ch, turn.

Row 7: 3 ch, shell in shell, * 15 ch, shell in shell, 2 ch, shell in next shell; rep from*, 15 ch, shell in shell, 1 tr/dc in third ch, turn.

Row 8: 3 ch, shell in shell.

* Making square: work 8 ch and dc/sc in top of square below. Chains of four rows below should be inside the dc/sc.

Continue work square as usual.

Then work shell in shell, 2 ch, shell in next shell; rep from*, make one more square, shell in shell, 1 tr/dc in third ch, turn.

Row 9: 3 ch, shell in shell, * 15 ch, shell in shell, 2 ch, shell in next shell; rep from*, 15 ch, shell in shell, 1 tr/dc in third ch, turn.

Row 10: 3 ch, shell in shell, * 13 ch, shell in shell, 2 ch, shell in next shell; rep from*, 13 ch, shell in shell, 1 tr/dc in third ch, turn.

Row 11: 3 ch, shell in shell, * 13 ch, shell in shell, 2 ch, shell in next shell; rep from*, 13 ch, shell in shell, 1 tr/dc in third ch, turn.

Row 12: 3 ch, shell in shell, * 15 ch, shell in shell, 2 ch, shell in next shell; rep from*, 15 ch, shell in shell, 1 tr/dc in third ch, turn.

Row 13: work like Row 3, but for square work 1 dc/sc in top of square below. Chains of four rows below should be inside the dc/sc.

Repeat rows 4 - 13 until you have reached your desired length.

After square row (3 or 8) work two rows as usual.

For next row work next: 3 ch, shell in shell, * 6 ch, 1 dc/sc in top of square below (chains of two rows below should be inside the dc/sc), 6 ch, shell in shell, 2 ch, shell in next shell; rep from*, 6 ch, 1 dc/sc in top of square below, 6 ch, shell in shell, 1 tr/dc in third ch.

Color combinations:

Colors & rows: 1 - 2 Rows: dark blue yarn. 3 Row: blue yarn. 4 - 7 Rows: dark blue yarn. 8 Row: pink yarn. 9 - 15 Rows: dark blue yarn.

Colors & rows: 1 - 5 Rows: purple yarn. 6 - 10 Rows: pink yarn. 11 - 15 Rows: green yarn.

Colors & rows: 1 - 3 Rows: brown yarn. 4 - 8 Rows: beige yarn. 9 - 13 Rows: dark blue yarn.
