Crochet shell stitch

Guide

Feel free to use any type of yarn (or even thread) for your project. Most yarns have the recommended crochet hook size on the label.


Techniques used in this stitch

UK / US crochet term:

Chain stitch – ch

Double crochet / single crochet – dc / sc

Half treble / Half double crochet - htr / hdc

Triple treble / Double triple crochet – ttr / dtr

Popcorn stitch of 7dc/sc - ppn

Stitch – st

Foundation Chain: Multiples of 16 + 4

Row 1: Skip 4ch, * make 1dc/sc in each of next 2ch, 2ch, skip 2 foundation ch; rep from *, 1dc/sc in each of next 2ch, 1ch, 1dc/sc in last ch, turn.

Row 2: Make 2ch an 1dc/sc in space of 1ch below, * [ 2ch, 2dc/sc in next space of 2ch ] – make 3 times, 2ch, make 1ppn in second ch below: work 7dc/sc in same ch, drop loop from hook.

Insert hook from back to front under top 2 loops of first dc/sc of group and grab dropped loop. Pull it through stitch; rep from * ,

[ 2ch, 2dc/sc in next space of 2ch ] – make 3 times, 2ch, make 2dc/sc in space of 4chs below, turn.

Row 3: Make 2ch, work 2dc/sc + 2ch in each space of 2ch below, work 1ch and 1dc/sc in space of 2ch at the end of the row, turn.

Row 4: Make 2ch an 1dc/sc in space of 1ch below, * work shell: 5ch, skip one space of 2ch and make 1dc/sc in next space of 2ch, turn, work 6dc/sc under the 5chs,

[ 6ch, turn, make 1dc/sc in the same space of 2ch, turn, work 6dc/sc under the 6chs ] – make 5 times.

Make 1ch, skip one space of 2ch below and work 1dc/sc in next space; rep from *.

Work 2dc/sc in last space of 2ch instead of making 1dc/sc, turn.

Row 5: Make 2ch, * work 1dc/sc in next space of 1ch, [ make 1dc/sc + 2htr/hdc + 1dc/sc in space of 6ch] – make 5 times, 1dc/sc in space of 5ch, 1ch; rep from *.

Work 1dc/sc in last space of 2ch instead of making 1ch, turn.

Row 6: Make 7ch and 1ttr/dtr in first dc/sc below, * 2ch, skip first small shell (of dc/sc and htr/hdc sts),

[ work 1dc/sc in base loop of each of next 2htr/hdc, 2ch ] – make 3 times,

work 2ttr/dtr in space of 1ch below; rep from *. Work 2ttr/dtr in space of 2ch at the end of the row and turn.

Row 7: Make 2ch, work 2dc/sc + 2ch in each space of 2ch below, work 1ch and 1dc/sc in seventh ch at the end of the row, turn.

Repeat rows 2 – 7 until you have reached your desired length.
